Understanding Testosterone for Women and Why it’s Important

By Dr. Lisa Maturo, Naturopathic Thyroid Doctor Phoenix

When thinking of testosterone, we imagine the hormone of large burly men. Not to be confused with steroids, testosterone is a critical hormone in both men and women’s bodies. Few realize the fact that women also need testosterone.

Testosterone for Women

Women produce testosterone in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Testosterone is an important hormone in sexual development as well. As women age, their testosterone level drops, as does their libido. Restoration of testosterone in women not only helps restore their sexual drive, but also helps give them relief for menopausal symptoms, renewed energy, stronger bones, and a general improvement in their sense of well-being.

When it comes to better skin, testosterone again is helpful. In growing older, women’s skin thins and wrinkles due to a reduced amount of testosterone in the body. Few realize that testosterone is one of the best hormones for skin and not only prevents thinning and wrinkling but also increases collagen and elastin as well.

What else can testosterone supplementation do for you? Because testosterone contributes to increased muscle mass, strength, endurance, decreased fat, increased exercise tolerance, and enhancement of well-being and mood – you guessed it, when this hormone begins to wane in your body so do these elements. Testosterone is also a memory enhancer and protects against the formation of Alzheimer’s.

Taking testosterone hormonal supplements will not deepen a voice or create more hair on the face. Doctors administering testosterone to women know the exact dosage needed so that women feel balance. Adverse effects of testosterone for women often occur with synthetic hormones that are at very high dosages.

Remember, that there is a synthetic testosterone and a natural testosterone. Use only natural as it is the best for your body and will give you the best ‘feel good’ result.

In the next blog article we will be discussing the value of hormone replacement therapy for men and the critical value of testosterone as men age.
